Asheville council to vote on switch to elected school board; would require state legislation
Joel Burgess, Citizen Times – In a potentially history-making move, City Council will vote on whether the city school board should be picked by election or remain an appointed body as it has for nearly a century, making it the last of two in the state. A third option that the council intends to vote on March 9 will be a hybrid model, an apparently unprecedented approach in which two Asheville City Board of Education members would be appointed and three elected to the five-member board.
