‘That fever pitch of fear’: Chronic staffing issues now acute in NC prisons
Travis Fain, WRAL — Stress is high in North Carolina prisons, with a functional vacancy rate above 30 percent in facilities across the state. It’s a chronic problem made worse by a pandemic that won’t end and rising wages outside prison walls. “It’s a more dire issue at these prisons than they’re willing to accept,” a correctional officer at one prison, one of two prison workers granted anonymity for this story, told WRAL News. “They are critically short.”
